The Vegetarian Society
The Vegetarian Society is an educational charity working to support, represent and increase the number of vegetarians in the UK.  They work constructively with businesses, government agencies, policy makers and professionals, whilst always remaining independent.  They rely on membership subscriptions and donations to carry out this vital work.  Established in 1847, they are the oldest vegetarian organisation in the world.

WHY ARE THEY NEEDED?
Vegetarians come from all walks of life. Some are confident in what they eat but others need support and guidance. Many shoppers find it difficult to tell which food and drinks are produced using animal products. Cafes and restaurants often expect vegetarian customers to eat fish. Health professionals receive little or no training in vegetarian nutrition. Hospitals rarely provide nutritious vegetarian meals for patients. Parents are often nervous of allowing their children to follow a vegetarian diet.

The Vegetarian Society is here to support and represent all vegetarians.

The Vegan Society

The Vegan Society
The Vegan Society is an educational charity that promotes and supports the vegan lifestyle.
The Chief Executive maintains contact with government departments and submits responses to consultation documents on subjects such as food labelling, climate change, nutrition and global food security.

The Society publishes the quarterly magazine The Vegan as well as a number of books. The magazine is sent to all members and is sold in some health food shops. See their publications page for more details.

Their Media and PR Officer responds to news items and works with journalists to promote positive stories about the benefits of the vegan lifestyle.

Young people are encouraged to question the origins and impact of their food by the work of the Education Officer. Volunteer school visitors across the country encourage debate, give presentations and cookery demonstrations and raise awareness of vegan issues.

They attend exhibitions and festivals as well as giving talks to a variety of organisations as part of their outreach work.

The merchandise department supports vegans and promotes veganism by selling products such as vegan cookery books, the Society’s own publications and Veg 1, a supplement specifically designed for vegans.

The Business Development department works with companies to help them promote their products and services by advertising in The Vegan magazine and by registering for the internationally recognised trademark. This also helps vegans to recognise vegan products instantly.

Volunteer Local and Group Contacts around the British Isles help to promote the work of The Society with the support of the National Contacts’ Coordinator. The International Coordinator promotes cooperation amongst vegan groups throughout the world. The Society aims to make veganism an easily adopted and widely recognised approach to reducing animal and human suffering and environmental damage by means of meaningful, peaceful and factual dialogue with individuals and organisations.
