What's in Season? July and August

For us, summer is one of the most exciting times to be a foodie. From plump strawberries to crisp greens, juicy peaches and fresh tomatoes, you can find all sorts of goodness in the garden this month.

Yet, if you’re not a keen gardener, don’t worry! Eating seasonally can easily be done when shopping in supermarkets or at farmers’ markets – and it will save your purse strings, too. If you’re wondering what to toss into your trolley for the next few months, then here are our favourite foods to be found in season in July and August:

Nectarines and Peaches:

One of the most delicious fruits on the planet when bought in season, juicy nectarines and peaches are bursting with flavour. We love to grill them and serve with soft scoops of ice cream. Or, for a savoury twist, try serving alongside pesto, or on flatbreads with creamy mozzarella or ricotta!

Courgette:

The humble courgette (or zucchini) is one of our favourite veggies, and can be used in all kinds of ways thanks to its neutral flavour. Try the health foodie’s favourite dish of courgetti, or you could try subbing half of our Rizopia for a half a portion or courgetti for a lighter pasta dish.

Tomatoes:

Tomatoes taste at their juiciest and most flavoursome come the end of summer, so August and even September are the perfect time to start batch cooking tomato sauces ready to serve with your Rizopia! Tomatoes pair perfectly with all sorts of flavours, although we love cooking ours classically – with garlic and onion, and with huge handfuls of fresh herbs.

Raspberries and blackberries:

Summer wouldn't be complete without a spot of berry picking, or without dishing up a berry crumble and pie. Raspberries and blackberries both come into season in late June, peaking in July and August, so make sure you get picking, and freeze any leftovers to keep you topped up throughout the winter!

Beetroot:

Beet crops grown in the spring are ready to harvest come July – and there are few healthier foods to place on your table than vibrant beetroot! Beets are full of wonderful detoxifying properties and are also great sources of folic acid and fibre. For a summery pasta dish, try serving cooked beetroot with goat’s cheese and dishing up with lashings of our spaghetti.

Rocket:

Fiery, peppery rocket (also known as arugula) is packed with iron, as well as vitamins A and C. Thanks to its strong flavour, rocket is perfect for livening up salads. However, we love to blend ours into homemade pesto for a real treat!
